Electicity Board:

Starting with the modest installed capacity of 156 MW (Mega Watt) with annual gross generation plus purchase of 630 MU (Million Units) at the dawn of independence, the TNEB has grown by leaps and bounds with generating capacity of 10122 MW as on 31.10.2008 comprising 2970 MW from four Thermal Stations, 424 MW from four Gas Turbine Stations, 17 MW from wind mills, 2187 MW from 37 Hydro Stations, 1180 MW from Private sector Projects, 2825 MW as Tamil Nadu’s share from Central Generating Stations, 305 MW as external assistance and 214 from Captive Power Plants. Generating capacity from privately owned wind farms is 4101 MW. The installed capacity of Cogeneration in Sugar Mills is 441.6 MW, Biomass power project is 114.85 MW and through Solar is 0.165 MW.

The Board’s gross generation during the year 2007-2008 was 66,066 MU. The total energy consumption during the same year was 53,370 MU.

TNEB has 199.53 lakh (as on 30.09.2008) consumers. The distribution network comprises 1.66 lakh circuit kilometers of extra high tension (above 33 kV)and high tension (11 kV to 33 kV) lines, 5.23 lakh kilometers of low tension lines, 1235 substations (as on 31.10.2008), 1.83 lakh distribution transformers besides other assets.
